How do you know if you are buying a new or used mattress? How can you tell if the warranty is still good on your mattress? How can you be sure you are getting a new mattress and not a refurbished or even used one? Well we are here to help! We are going to go over a few questions you need to have answered before deciding to purchase a new mattress from anyone.
Is the law tag still attached? This is the easiest and most obvious way to find out if you have bought a new mattress. This is the tag that has “Do not remove under penalty of law” written at the top. Typically, under that there will be another tag that will contain information on when your mattress was manufactured and will be needed if you ever have a warranty claim to make on your mattress. However, just because this tag is still intact does not mean you have a new mattress…
If you look closely at the picture we’ve put on here you can see that your law tag will include a “Date of Manufacture” line that will have, at the very least, the month and year that your mattress was made at the factory. That is the actual date that the warranty on that mattress starts. So if you see a date similar to the one in the picture on here, your warranty is already 7 years old! Always check this tag to be sure that you are getting the most out of your warranty, and to be sure you are getting a mattress that hasn’t been sitting in someone’s warehouse for a few years.
Mattress wholesalers can be a great place to get a quality mattress at a fraction of the price. However, these mattresses are often bought second hand from retailers who have had them returned due to comfort issues. These mattresses, while being a great steal if you can find one in near perfect condition, do not carry any manufacturer warranty. The warranty of mattresses are non-transferable, which means only the original consumer has the right to make a warranty claim on these mattresses. Always ask to make sure you are the first person who has owned your mattress to be sure you have the protection of a warranty.
Hopefully these were some helpful tips in your search for a new mattress. Be sure to check that the law tag is still intact, check the date that your mattress was manufactured, and ask if the mattress has any previous owners.
